How to Find the Best Video Games for Kids

Video Games

When video games were first introduced, we had basic games such as space invaders, Pac man and tennis – remember pong? Everyone loved to play and the games were age appropriate for all ages. Unfortunately, as the gaming graphics and technology improved, the realism grew right along with it. As a result, parents need to be on their toes when selecting age appropriate video games for their children.

Fortunately for parents, the gaming industry has put a ratings system in place to help select the right game for the age.  This system is the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, also known as the ESRB. The purpose of this system is to rate all gaming software from the ones that are appropriate for everyone to the ones that are only appropriate for adults.

The ratings are as follows:

EC (Early Childhood)
E (Everyone)
E 10+ (Everyone over 10 years of age)
T (Teens)
M (Mature, anyone over 17 years of age)
AO (Adults only)
RP (not yet rated)

These ratings are clearly printed on the front of every video games sold.  Most of the games sold today range in the E to M ratings categories.  Games that are rated E are fun for everyone. These are usually games such as Super Mario Brothers, Mario Cart, etc. These games have very little violence and the violence you may encounter could be things like a character jumping on a silly monster or your car crashing into a barrier. Of course no one gets hurt in these games and there is no blood or gory graphics.

Pros And Cons Of Video Games For Kids

Video Games

In this article I’d like to weight some of the pros and cons of video games for kids, because in spite of all the negative press video games get, especially in regard to kids, I do believe there is the potential for a lot of good.

The Cons of Video Gaming for Kids

Starting with the obvious reasons parents usually cite for not allowing their kids to play video games, probably number one on the list is that it is very bad for their eyes. With the new wave of high vision television sets I’m not sure if eye damage is as bad as the old cathode ray TVs, but I’m sure it is still not all that good for the eyes, and this is not limited to children either. It would be great if a TV screen could be made that wasn’t so harmful… or at least not to the degree that non-reversible damage is done. So if this issue could be addressed, I’m sure that would take quite a bit of sting out of the debate.

Second on the list is that video games are bad for their brains. In this regard I would have to say it depends on the game, but with the tremendous lack of responsibility on the part of the game makers the negative reputation is surely deserved. Were the quality of the games a bit higher, with less a degree of wanton violence and destruction, perhaps parents would not be so negative to the idea.

The Appropriate Movies for Kids

Movie Animation

Nowadays kids movies have reached new levels. They have superb animations in them and characters and story lines are really nice too. But some problems have also risen in the kids movies. Some are made around emotional themes. So it becomes really necessary to first watch these movies yourself and then if you think the movie is appropriate for your kids, let them enjoy it too. But how to evaluate the movies? Follow these tips:

If you notice that your child is scared of the strange creatures in his books, then you should also not let him watch the movies with animated crazy creatures in them. These will also scare your kid.

If your kid gets scared during sleep and wakes up, then again its a hint, that you don’t let him watch the kids movies with scary animations or creatures. This will increase the fear in him.

If your child gets tired watched the cartoons of short duration like Dora The Explorer, you should not let him watch the longer kids movies.

You might notice him during the play. If he gets scared, when someone chases him, it will not be a good idea to let him watch scary fictional movies.

If your kid is not comfortable in loud or noisy environments, don’t get him some action packed thriller movie. These will be noisy too.

Getting the Best Out of Movies for kids

Movie Animation

There certainly will not be any shortage of movies available to pick out for the young ones. The first decision you will have to make however is what age group and what type of movies for kids are going to be most appropriate for that age.

For the little ones of course going with the classic animation is probably the safest choice to make. However it must be remembered that even though movies for kids may be animated it is not always appropriate for young eyes.

Although there are many new movies that have come out on the market for children one should never forget about the famous classics. Every child should be exposed to at least a few of the Disney classics as they are something that no child ever seems to lose interest in. It must be admitted that the Disney classics just seem to be part of everyone’s child hood. There is no doubt that you child will have there own taste and favorites when it comes to the type of movies for kids that they enjoy watching. Some children truly enjoy any type of movie that has to do with animals while others prefer to go more for the comedy style.

When you get into the older children they will most definitely have there own picks and choices when it comes to movies for kids and there will be a vast difference between those that the guys like compared to the girls. But this is understandable when it’s that way with adults as well.

Video Game Rental By Mail Is A Winner For Parents And Kids

Video Games

My life is much easier since I found video game rental by mail. Through the years, I have spent lots of money on video game systems and the games. I have a seventeen year old who has loved video gaming since he was about five years old.

The game systems are good investments because they will usually be played for at least a couple of years. It is the games themselves that have hurt the wallet so bad. Games are expensive and often times very temporary.

New Video Games

Nothing is worse than buying a new game for over .00 and having your kid beat it in less than 24 hours. This has happened a few times to us. I watched the games sit and gather dust after that. What a waste of money.

How about if they do not like the game? This has happened quite a few times to us and I watched those brand new video games gather dust also.

What can we do? We cannot take them back and get our money because they are opened. There is nothing wrong with them because they are not broken. If you try to sell them to someone you might get back half of what you spent if you are lucky. What else can we do?

The Answer Is Video Game Rental By Mail

Strict study patterns, high competition in sports, and pressure from pals, parents, and teachers are some problems that can trigger kids to be under immense stress and mental exhaustion. One of the most common ways for children to relieve mental stress is video gaming. Youngsters may even so get so addicted to video games that it may change their mental state and way of life.

A few of the most common video games played by children are Counter-Strike, Halo, Warcraft, Playstation, Xbox, classics, and other arcade games. The most prevalent video games played by children incorporate the aspects of violence. Violence in video games may have a few of the most adverse effects on the mental state of children. Violence leads to the increase in belligerent thoughts, resulting within the probability that a gentle or ambiguous irritation could be interpreted in a hostile manner. Violent video games also result in a general arousal of physical and mental states like heart rate and brain interpretation rates. Youngsters tend to develop diverse behavioral patterns and tendencies that could reflect the kind of games to which they had been exposed. They might tend to directly imitate some violent behavior they have recently been exposed to leading to real life physical fights that might trigger severe injuries. There have been recent real life killings at schools and public locations and the cause of such brutal killing has been concluded as the increased exposure to violent video games. It has been proved that children’s exposure to violent video games is potentially more hazardous than the exposure to violent television and movies.

Super Nintendo Console is a legend in the video game industry and still popular all over the world. It was the hottest gaming console in the 80′s and 90′s. You would be astonished to know that the later gaming consoles like Sony play stations use a lot of its hardware and processing features of this console.

Current games available in Sony play station or Xbox 360 are violent and presents a world full of crime to your kids.
